Meet the Founder: Embracing the Slow Run Journey

Welcome to the Sloth Run Club, where every step tells a story and every runner has a home, no matter the pace. I'm excited to share with you not just the essence of our club, but also a piece of my personal journey that led to the creation of this community. A journey from recovery to discovery, and ultimately, to the formation of a space where the beauty of slow running is celebrated.

A New Beginning

My running journey began in 2022, marking the end of a 30-year battle with ankle instability. Following surgery that finally addressed this long-standing issue, I found myself capable of running for the first time in decades. This newfound ability was not just about movement; it was a gateway to freedom, exploration, and the joy of experiencing the world at my own pace.

In August 2023, I completed my first half marathon. Crossing that finish line was an achievement, but it was the solitude of being among the last to finish that sparked a realization: I needed a community where my pace was the norm, not the exception.

The Quest for Community

My search for like-minded runners led me to various groups, including Facebook communities. Yet, even among groups branded as havens for slow runners, I found myself on the fringe, my 17-minute mile pace setting me apart. It was this search that illuminated a gap—a need for a space where the slowest among us could find camaraderie, support, and acceptance.

The Birth of the Sloth Run Club

Nestled in the heart of Wyoming, with its expansive trails, breathtaking wildlife, and the serene beauty of the mountains, I found the perfect backdrop for the Sloth Run Club. My life, shared with two dogs and two cats, is intertwined with the tranquility and raw beauty of trail running. It's here, in the slow rhythm of nature, that the concept of The Sloth Run Club was nurtured.

A Scientific Approach to Slow Running

My academic journey, culminating in a PhD in genetics, ignited a fascination with the biology of running. This exploration revealed a profound truth: not all are built for speed, but everyone is built to move. Armed with knowledge and a curiosity for optimal training techniques, I delved into methodologies like Jeffing—intermittent walking and running—and strategies to increase distance safely.
